Amidst the Wonosobo Mountains, Revitalization Brings a Comfortable Learning Space to SDN 03 Kertek

Wonosobo, Central Java, August 15, 2026 — The SDN 03 Kertek school building has been standing since 1976. For decades, the school, nestled amidst the Wonosobo mountains, has been a place for children to learn and grow. However, over time, parts of the building have begun to show their age. The roof is sagging, while the windows and frames are no longer in prime condition.

After decades of not being renovated, SDN 03 Kertek, Wonosobo finally received an educational unit revitalization program in 2025. Through this program, the school received assistance of around IDR 425 million to rehabilitate three classrooms and build a new toilet package that includes toilets for boys, girls, toilets for people with disabilities, and handwashing facilities.

Since August 2026, Muhammad Wahid Sulton has been entrusted with the additional leadership role of Acting Principal of SDN 03 Kertek. The school is no stranger to him. Prior to becoming principal, Wahid taught at SDN 03 Kertek for six years. After five years at another school, he returned to the school where he once taught.

Wahid explained that the school building was still usable before the revitalization, but some parts were starting to deteriorate. "Before this revitalization, the building was still in good condition, but not very good. The roof tiles are starting to sag. Furthermore, the windows and frames are also in poor condition," he said.

Now, the changes aren't just visible in the school's physical condition. Wahid has also seen the students' response to the improved learning spaces. "The kids say they're happy at school, it's more comfortable. I've also seen their enthusiasm for learning grow. Even in the afternoon, many of the kids still gather here," he said.

Sabata, a fifth-grade student at SDN 03 Kertek, also felt the changes directly. Before the revitalization, he admitted that the school wasn't as comfortable as it is now. One of the things he remembers most is the frequent problems with the sanitation facilities.

"The school was in poor condition, with dirty and frequently clogged toilets. After the revitalization, the school's appearance has improved, and the toilets are more comfortable. This has made students more enthusiastic and less reluctant to study," Sabata said.

For Sabata, the changes to the school building and facilities have significantly transformed his daily experience at school. The more comfortable environment has made him even more enthusiastic about learning.

Meanwhile, Maria Magdalena Juliati, who retired on August 1, 2026, previously serving as the principal of SDN 03 Kertek, said the condition of the building prior to the revitalization was a concern for the school community. The building, which had been standing since 1976, had never been renovated before.

"For this revitalization, the condition before the revitalization by the government, the building was from 1976, it had never been renovated," said Maria.

This condition was then reported through the Basic Education Data (Dapodik). In 2025, SDN 03 Kertek received a revitalization program that introduced changes to the school's classrooms and sanitation facilities.

Maria said the changes are also felt in daily learning activities. Cleaner and more comfortable classrooms provide a new atmosphere for students. "The impact of the revitalization is that the children automatically feel comfortable learning. The walls also feel clean, so all the children can study well and use the restroom more comfortably," she said.

Meanwhile, Minister of Primary and Secondary Education (Mendikdasmen) Abdul Mu'ti emphasized that the educational unit revitalization program is part of the government's efforts to provide better educational services for all students. The revitalization focuses not only on physical improvements to buildings but also on ensuring that educational units are safe, comfortable, and supportive learning environments.

For the school community, the revitalization is part of an effort to create a more comfortable learning environment for students. Changes to three classrooms and sanitation facilities are expected to support learning activities and children's growth and development.

The revitalization received in 2025 is part of a new journey for SDN 03 Kertek. The changes felt not only in the renovated building, but also in the daily lives of students like Sabata, who now feel more comfortable using the school facilities and are more enthusiastic about learning. At the school, which has been established since 1976, learning spaces have been re-prepared to accompany the next generation in growing, learning, and preparing for their future.*** (Writer: Ririn / Photographer: Yuswan Rosepi / Editor: Destian)
