Yogyakarta, Ministry of Education and Culture - Picture books and storytelling activities are a gateway to fostering literacy among children with special needs (ABK) at the IT Mekar Insani Kindergarten. Through teacher support and mobile library services, children are introduced to books tailored to their individual characteristics, interests, and abilities. Mekar Insani IT Kindergarten teacher Maya explained that literacy success in children with special needs isn't always measured by their ability to read or recognize letters. Teachers also observe children's interest in books, attention span, engagement in activities, and communication development. "We see the growth of interest, engagement, and communication through books. The initial indicators are how interested the child is in books, able to focus their attention for longer periods, and willing to interact with the teacher's guidance," Maya said on Thursday (10/15). According to him, every child has different characteristics and needs. Some children are interested in pictures but are unable to maintain focus for long periods. Others need help understanding instructions or communicating. Therefore, teachers adapt reading materials and mentoring methods through initial observations. Yogyakarta, Ministry of Education and Culture - Deputy Minister of Elementary and Secondary Education (Wamendikdasmen), Fajar Riza Ul Haq, emphasized the importance of innovation and adjustments to education policies to meet community needs. This was conveyed during the Dean's Report and Scientific Oration at the culmination of the 43rd Anniversary of the Graduate School of Gadjah Mada University (UGM) in Yogyakarta on Thursday (10/15). Fajar stated that public policy is dynamic and can be adjusted based on issues encountered during implementation. He believes that direct experience in the field, including listening to the complaints of teachers in remote, frontier, and outermost (3T) areas, is a crucial factor in driving breakthroughs in education policy. "There's no such thing as a fixed policy; it's always evolving," Fajar said. He cited the example of the problems faced by private schools when their teachers were appointed as Government Employees with Work Agreements (PPPK). This situation has caused a number of private schools to lose their best teachers and experience a shortage of teaching staff. Jakarta, October 19, 2026 – To commemorate the International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction, the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education (Kemendikdasmen) is promoting increased teacher awareness and competency in addressing disaster risks. This effort is being carried out by providing teachers with the knowledge and skills needed to build preparedness within educational institutions. One way this is done is through face-to-face training for teachers and education personnel in four provinces: Aceh, North Sumatra, West Sumatra, and East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), involving the Kemendikdasmen Technical Implementation Unit (UPT). This training covers two main topics: Disaster Preparedness for Educators and Education Personnel (PTK) and Post-Disaster Psychosocial Support Services for PTK. Through these two topics, teachers and education personnel are equipped with an understanding of the steps to take before, during, and after a disaster, from mitigation efforts and safety procedures to psychosocial support for affected school residents. Pontianak, October 18, 2026 — The 2026 Education Unit Revitalization Program reached 943 schools in West Kalimantan with a budget of Rp846.68 billion. To ensure its implementation meets the needs of educational units, the Minister of Primary and Secondary Education (Mendikdasmen) Abdul Mu'ti directly reviewed the revitalization process at SMAN 7 Pontianak and SD Negeri 39 Sungai Raya, Kubu Raya Regency, on Saturday (10/17). This program is aimed at providing safer, more comfortable, and more suitable learning facilities for students and teachers. "We are targeting the revitalization of thousands of educational institutions this year as a manifestation of President Prabowo Subianto's commitment to improving the quality of education for the nation's children throughout Indonesia," said Minister Mu'ti.
